Visitor Parking and Entrance

Staff and Student Safety is our top priority. All visitors must access through the security vestibule where they will be required to state their name and purpose.

Communication will be initiated with the office staff via the AI video phone system located at the temporary entrance.

The Construction Zone for NHHS is labeled in orange on the image above and includes the front lawn area and side courtyards adjacent to east and west facing walls. The area has been fenced off for campus safety and will remain in place for the duration of the repairs.

*Due to Construction, Brogden Hall and the sports fields will be the only facility reservations allowed.

Construction Details

What work is being done at NHHS?

Structural evaluation/repairs and waterproofing of the main building were funded in the 2023-24 Capital Budget. During the early design phase of this project, the initial evaluation performed by the design team identified structural issues related to the foundation and exterior wall. The scope of the project then shifted to securing areas for safety, determining the cause, and developing a scope of work for repair. Phase I of the project will stabilize the foundation of the southern facing wall and determine the scope of work required to repair the exterior masonry wall.

What is Phase I?

Phase One scope of work will include:

Shoring of west and east wall facing walls and removal of existing terra cotta on exterior face of walls to assess existing conditions
Excavation around perimeter of building, extending 15’ from face of building along south elevation and along east/ west elevations at end classrooms; repair of foundations in these areas to include addition of micropiles at existing footing spaced approx. 6’ OC, with supplemental piers added at each micropile, doweled to the existing concrete stem wall
Cleaning of crawl space to allow access to foundation for steel installation as part of foundation repair
Along south elevation and along east/ west elevations at end classrooms, removal of all sheetrock, supporting metal framing, and existing plaster from interior face of exterior walls to identify full extent of wall cracking and to allow pressure injected grout contractor(s) to evaluate full scope of work necessary and provide cost/ scheduling data
Front lawn area and side courtyards adjacent to east and west facing walls will be fenced off for campus safety through duration of repairs
The main corridor will remain open for school use, along with all rooms to the north of the corridor. Doors that lead from the southern facing rooms to the corridor will be temporarily sealed to prevent access from the corridor and to prevent dust from exiting the construction zone
Contractor access will be via stair scaffolding through window openings on the south elevation of the building or through main entry door
Contractor material staging will be on the lawn in front of historic building
Security vestibule construction has been placed on hold while interior demo work is performed. Scope of work and scheduling for wall repairs will determine when security vestibule construction will resume.
Phase One Schedule: August through October

What is Phase II?

At this time, known Phase Two scope includes:

Replacement of West Wall, including windows and terra cotta
Replacement of East Wall, including windows and terra cotta
Extending power back to locations where outlets were located prior to demo (once work is completed)

Anticipated additional Phase Two scope includes:

Pressure injection of grout along southern wall to address cracks
Possible replacement of wall areas on south elevation too damaged for pressure injection to be effective

Scope that may be part of Phase Two or could be part of future phases depending on the timing of funding allocation:

Installation of sheetrock at interior walls where demo/ repairs occurred
Replacement of terra cotta along southern elevation (depending on condition)
Replacement of windows along south elevation (depending on condition)
Treatment at exterior face of walls to prevent water intrusion.

Exact timing of Phase Two is TBD as we 1) Define the extent of exterior wall repairs needed, 2) Cost of repairs required, and 3) Timing of additional funding, if current funds available are not sufficient
